What Makes a Good Nappy

There is a lot to consider when choosing a nappy for your baby. He will likely be in nappies for at least two years, and wear them for a majority of the day, so make sure that you choose the right one for him.

Cost is often a factor when choosing a nappy. If they cost more than £60 for 12, this may become a bit expensive for many people. Newborn babies urinate approximately 20 times a day, and usually require a nappy change about every two hours.

The shape and size of your baby is also an important factor. A good nappy will fit your baby well, whether he is small or large, full of rolls of fat or more on the skinny side.

If environmental impact is a consideration, there are many nappy companies which now make green nappies, that biodegrade quicker and easier than the non-green ones. These green nappies are generally also free of toxic chemicals and use more natural fabrics.

What about cloth nappies? More economical and environmentally friendly, there’s also a lot to look for when buying reusable nappies. There are a few different types of cloth nappies to choose from; there are fitteds, all-in-ones, prefolds, pocket style and others to choose from.

Natural fibres such as cotton and hemp tend to cause less reactions when compared to polyester suedecloth, which is used as the inner fabric in many cloth nappies. Cloth nappies generally close with either Velcro or snap closures. Snaps are often preferred because they last longer, but Velcro will give a more precise fit on your baby.

Wool is a wonderful choice for the outer, waterproof cover. Wool is great for children with sensitive skin and have a natural water resistance.

Cloth nappies come in a variety of styles and sizes. They start at preemie size, and go all the way up to toddler size. There are also one size fits all cloth nappies that have various tabs and buttons to give a perfect fit.
